We are vegans who have come together to raise up some of the chronic issues we perceive operating in the vegan and nonhuman animal advocacy movements.
Your first thoughts may be, “why are we focusing on criticism rather than working together?”, but, if you think about it, the movement has been fragmented for a long time now. Some of the issues we are addressing have been a part of the discussion of the movement for decades.
Even though we are trying to break down one form of supremacy, a supremacy hierarchy continues to exist within veganism. One of the results is that the voices of many communities have been silenced or ignored–including women of color, LGBTQIA+ people, fat people, neurodivergent people, and disabled people –as we articulate concern for nonhumans.
Thus, we propose the Vegan Bill of Consistent Anti-Oppression to begin addressing the issues that continue to decenter nonhumans while centering a certain type of human, and thus, preventing the Nonhuman Animal Liberation Movement from moving forward.
As the movement evolves, and we continue to encounter issues that need to be identified, this bill is committed to also evolve. No one is perfect, and we are all (and should be) learning continuously because of this, we hope you will feel comfortable in getting in touch should you find something that needs to be clarified or edited on behalf of your own community.
